R.A.O.B.
The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB), often called “The Buffs,” is one of the largest fraternal and philanthropic organizations in the United Kingdom, established in 1822. While it shares some structural similarities with Freemasonry, it is a distinct organization with a history rooted in the theatrical community of London
Core Identity and Motto: Nemo Mortalium Omnibus Horis Sapit (Latin for “No Man Is at All Times Wise”).
Maxim: “Justice, Truth and Philanthropy“.
Purpose: The RAOB focuses on social interaction, mutual support among members, and extensive charitable work. It provides aid to members, their families, and various local and national charities.

History and Name
Founding: It was founded in August 1822 at the Harp Inn on Great Russell Street in London by artist Joseph Lisle and comedian William Sinnett, along with theater technicians.

RAOB Manila Rises
The Manila Provincial Grand Lodge (PGL) of the Philippines is the governing body for the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) in the Philippines, operating under the Grand Lodge of Victoria (GLE). It was officially installed in a historic double event in November 2025.
- Establishment Date: The PGL was installed in November 2025, alongside the first officer installation of the first minor lodge in the country.
- First Lodge: Philippine Carabao Lodge No. 1 was the first minor lodge, consecrated on November 15, 2025.
- Expansion: As of late 2025, the order had already consecrated six lodges, with more expected to open in 2026
Present: Today the GLE has the Grand Lodge of Queensland, Grand Lodge of Victoria, Grand Lodge of New South Wales East, Grand Lodge New South Wales West, Grand Lodge of South Australia & Grand Lodge of Tasmania still exist, as does the Grand Australasian Banner in the following states – Victoria, Queensland & Tasmania.
Global Presence
While centered in the UK, the RAOB spread throughout the former British Empire. Active grand lodges and branches still exist in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Philippines Membership has declined since its peak in the 1970s, but it remains active in many communities worldwide.

There are four primary degrees of progression:
- 1st Degree: Brother (or Kangaroo)
- 2nd Degree: Certified Primo
- 3rd Degree: Knight of the Order of Merit (KOM)
- 4th Degree: Roll of Honour (ROH)
Meetings involve formal business followed by social activities, such as singing, storytelling, and musical entertainment.
Discussions of politics, religion, and gambling are strictly prohibited during lodge meetings to maintain harmony among diverse members.
While the RAOB historically requires support for the British Crown, international lodges often amend this to require loyalty to the Constitution of the country in which they operate.
The standard dress is typically a shirt and tie with a coat or jacket / or official Barong and trousers. Officers wear specific regalia, including chain collars and jewels.
